People ask me how I paint. I don’t know. I just do. I sit in front of the canvas and sometimes a voice will say “use blue”, “start with texture”, “get out the trowel”, “mix up a mild reddish orange”, or “scribble with black”. It’s much more likely that the voice is silent and I have to kick start the process. So, I do something and then I do something else until the next step is obvious. Now even though the next step is obvious, it does not mean that I know where the painting is going. I keep doing and the painting keeps growing. Once it gets to a point of some kind of definition I either recognize it as a potential finished painting or failure, which means I keep working on it or I throw up my hands, paint over it and start again. I have many more starts than I have paintings. Most of the time the paintings completely change directions several times before they are finished. Sometimes they sit in storage for years unfinished until they speak to me. There are a couple right now that may never speak to me. They are just waiting for me as I am waiting for them.
